Ephesians 5:1-21 [19]

If you are new to this blog, I encourage you to start with Intro [1] and then continue in order.

DAY 1
Read 4:1 - 5:21 and mark every instance of "walk".

4:1 gives a general statement that is fleshed out more specifically in the rest of the book, that we should "walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which [we] have been called". Do you see any general statements like that in the beginning of 5? If so, what is/are it/they?

DAY 2
This whole passage, 5:1-21, has a lot of contrasts throughout. It also contains something we haven't talked about yet, a cause and effect. Whenever you see the word "because" you know there is one, just like a "but" alerts you to a contrast. Look at the because in v6 and write down what the cause is and what the effect is.
Write down 2 "but"s from vv1-14 and what is being contrasted.

Spend some time thanking and praising God for some of the truths you have seen in your study in days 1 and 2.

DAY 3
This passage also contains a lot of do this, don't do this or more putting off and putting on.

Write out at least 3 dos and 3 don'ts. They could be related (by contrast) or not.

Pray about some of these, asking God to help you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called. (4:1)

BONUS!
There is sooo much you could do with this section. If you are intersted in more... we have not yet talked about the word "for". It occurrs several times in this section. It is a connecting word showing a relationship between 2 or more things. Pick some "for"s to look at and figure out what they are connecting or what the relationship is between the things it is connecting.

You could also look at more of the buts and what is being contrasted.

You could write out more of the dos and don'ts.

EXTRA QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

1. How is being "imitators of God" different than "walking in love"?
2. What is "walking in love" compared to in verse 2 and how does that help you understand it better?

Notice that sexual immorality, impurity, and covetousness are mentioned both in verse 3 and 5.
3. What do you think is the significance of that?

"4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving." Paul said some things about our speech in the last chapter too.

4. Compare with these:

Chapter 4 "25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another."

"29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear."

Ephesians 1:15-23 [7]

If you are new to this blog, please start with 1 (Intro) and then continue in order. Before each day's work, pray and ask God to open your eyes to his truth through his Holy Spirit. Ask for his leading and guidance. Also, as you read, stop to praise God for things, thank God for things, confess sin, or ask for help to be like the example you see in the scriptures. Just generally talk to God about what you are reading about! DAY 1 AND 2 Pray Read chapters 1 and 2 and look for key words that are repeated. Pick 2 and then mark them distinctly on your manuscript in chapters 1 and 2. Praise God for something about him in the passage. DAY 3 Mark grace and peace distinctly in chapters 1 and 2 if you didn't already. I circled grace in orange and put blue waves under peace (as in peace like a river😀 ), but you can mark them however you'd like. If grace and peace are what you marked, feel free to look for other repeated words to mark. DAY 4 Paul prays for the Ephes...

Ephesians in Review - Unity and Honesty [25]

If you are new to this blog, I encourage you to start with  Intro [1]  and then continue in order. This is in answer to Ephesians in Review at the end of   Ephesians 6:10-24 THE LAST ONE!!! [23] . This study of Ephesians has been so rich for me.  It was one of my favorite books of the Bible before I started, but I love it even more and understand it even better now. It has also amazed me how many opportunities God has given me to share from my time studying it. It seems like Ephesians relates to EVERYTHING! 1) When I started studying Ephesians this time, I was struck by the theme of unity. I found that it was all over the place, even when the word itself was not used (for more on unity, see my post,  Unity Through and Through - Thoughts on Ephesians 4:1-16 [16] ). I was happy to receive confirmation of that when I read one of my pastor's sermons, and he said that unity was the main theme of Ephesians: "to unite all things in [Christ], things in heaven an...

Does the Translation Matter? [3]

If you are new to this blog, please start with 1 (Intro) and then continue in order. The first thing to do is to read through the whole book of Ephesians to get the big picture. But before you do that, you need to pick a translation. I will be using and referring to the ESV. You can use whatever translation you'd like, however, for this kind of detailed study, a word to word translation would be preferred over a thought to thought translation. The introduction to your translation may talk about this.
